The skills that I have learnt through AS media are :
- Creating a storyboard - When planning our opening scene last year we needed to create a storyboard to help us visualize what we wanted our opening scene to look like and what we wanted the outcome to be like. On the storyboard we had to include the different shots we wanted to use in the opening scene, we had to include what editing techniques we were going to use on that certain shot and also we had to include what sounds were being heard in the different shots on the storyboard. The storyboard has helped me gain knowledge and skills because now I know what to include on the storyboard and also now I know storyboards have to be in quite a lot of detail.
- Filming different camera shots - When filming our opening scene we had to include different types of camera shots to show an understanding of different camera shots. Through doing this I have learnt a variety of different camera shots that I can include in future projects. Some shot types that I have learnt are; match on action, 180 degree, shot reverse shot, etc.
- Editing on iMovie and Final Cut Express - When editing our opening scene we had to use a variety of different editing softwares. One being iMovie and the other being Final Cut Express. I had never used either of these editing software's before so it was interesting to see how much I have progressed in the past year. At the start of the AS media, I didn't know how to import footage, how to edit footage or how to export footage in either software. I now know how to do all three in both software's. This is useful as I can use these software's to edit the promotional video and other upcoming projects that need to be created.
- Planning - When we started working on the opening scene we weren't aware of how much planning the video needed before we could film and edit it. For example; we didn't know how difficult it was to plan times and dates for filming the actual video. The knowledge we have gained from this will help us as we will be more organized when deciding when to film, where to film and who to film for any upcoming projects.
- Group work - A lot of group work was done when planning and creating our opening scene video. When planning we all had ideas on what we wanted and we tried our best to come together as a group and combine all of our ideas together. There were some disagreements which had to be resolved in a professional matter, but this helped us grow as a team. However, there were more agreements than disagreements in the whole process. When editing the scene we all had a say in what we wanted and when I had finished editing a little bit of the video, I would show the rest of the team and see what they thought. We would then change things that needed to be changed and discussed other things we could do for the rest of the video. The skills that we have learnt through the group work will help us in the upcoming projects as we will know we need to listen to everyone's opinions and try and make a good video out of it.
- Listening - A lot of listening was taken place when creating the opening scene as we all listened to everyone's ideas and opinions on the video. As well as listening to each other, we also listened to our teachers and class mates as we wanted to know their feedback. This meant we took both their good and bad feedback on board and used that to make the video better. We listened a lot to the useful criticism as it helped us correct our mistakes, and it helped us make the video as good as it could have been. We will definitely use the skill of listening in upcoming projects as we know this is what helps us achieve the best we can.
- Self assessing - We self assessed our video a lot when editing it, and this helped us because we all knew what we liked and what we didn't like. This meant that we were aware of the strengths and the weaknesses of our video. It also meant we knew there were some improvements that needed to be made. Self assessing our upcoming projects will be useful as we will know what we need to improve and we will form our own opinions on the final outcomes of the projects.
